声をあげ、挑戦や成功について語り合うことが目的で毎年開催されるWomen In Society。このイベントを主催するElleは、日本にいる女性のエンパワーメントを推進し、声を上げ、あらゆる差別、男性優位の考え方や時代遅れの既成概念から人々を解き放つことを目的としています。
毎年、たくさんの強く、勇気ある女性たちが自分への自信のなさ、失敗に対する恐怖感、社会から課されたプレッシャーをいかに乗り越えたかを語ります。宇宙飛行士、建築家、起業家、動物愛護家や科学者が自らの経験や、参加者へのアドバイスを口にします。彼女たちが話すメッセージは多くの場合、一緒です。それは、頑固であれ、ということ。頑固さというのは人生においてもっとも大事な要素なのかもしれません。あなたを行きたい方向に導いてくれるのだから。
今回のイベントでは、特にニューヨーク出身でアーティストやライター、そして動物愛護家として活躍するエマ・ファーラー さんと「AI vs. 教科書が読めない子どもたち」の執筆者であり、日本の数学者である新井紀子さんのトークに興味を持ちました。
エマさんは、自分のアイデンティティをみつけることについて（オードリー・ヘップバーンを祖母に持つ彼女はこのことについて感じることが多くあるのです ）、また、自分の信念や人生の目的を選ぶことの必要性について語りました。自分の信念や人生の目的は、自分が正しいと思えるものでなければなりません。無視できないような何かに出会った時、そのことばかりについて考えてしまうようなことに出会った時、それは人生をかけてでも取り組むべきことなのでしょう。人に期待されているからという理由だけで何かに取り組むのであれば、後悔が残るだけです。エマさんは現在、UHNCRの大使を務め、難民となった子供達が人生を取り戻す手助けをしています。
新井さんは、未来の働き方について、また、AIの時代になったとしてもAIにも取って代わることができない正しいスキルセットを身につけることの必要性について語りました。アルゴリズムが作ったり、作り方を学ぶことができない何かをみつけるのです^-^ 子供達にはエモーショナル・インテリジェント（高い心の知能指数を持つ）になり、 適応性が高く、幅広い分野で活躍できるような人間になるように育てることが 大事です。また、学ぶことが好きになるよう、導いてあげるべきです。人生100年時代では、学ぶ機会がたくさんあるでしょうから。
お二人の関心や取り組みは、かけ離れた分野のものですが、子供たちにとってより良い今を作ることに注力している、という共通のゴールを持っています。お二人のお話は本当に興味深いものでした。

Raising a voice and speaking about the challenges as well as success is what the Women In Society annual event is all about. Elle magazine that organizes the event aims at empowering women in Japan to step up, speak up and ignite the changes that can liberate them from discrimination, patriarchy and the outdated cultural stereotypes.
Every year, many strong and courageous women take the stand and tell their stories of how they overcame their lack of confidence, their fear of failure and the pressure of roles assigned to them by society. Astronauts, architects, entrepreneurs, philanthropists and scientists share their experience, give advice and it seems to often be same one – be stubborn. Indeed, the stubbornness is the best quality you can ever have in life for it brings you to where you want to go.
This time, I was particularly interested in two speakers Emma Ferrer – the artist, writer and philanthropist from New York and Noriko Arai – Japanese mathematician who wrote “AI vs. Children who can not read textbooks“.
Emma was talking about finding your own identity (and she has a lot to say about it growing up in the shadow of her grandmother Audrey Hepburn) and the necessity of choosing your cause, your purpose only if you feel right about it. If you find something you cannot ignore, cannot help but think about it all the time, then it is worth dedicating your life to it. Doing something just because you are expected to do it will in the end leave you with a lot of regrets. She is currently working as an ambassador to the UN Refugee agency helping refugee children rebuild their lives.
Noriko was talking about the future of work and the necessity of obtaining the right set of skills that will be irreplaceable even in the upcoming age of AI. Focus on something algorithms won’t be able to reproduce or learn to build them. ^-^ We should teach our kids how to grow up being emotionally intelligent, adaptive and able to apply themselves in the wide range of fields. We should teach our kids how to love learning because in the 100 year lifespan there will be a lot of learning involved.
Although their fields of interest and activities cannot be farther from each other, they both strive for the same goal of creating a better today for our children. I enjoyed both of their talks immensely.
最近、私は女性の成功とは何か、というテーマについてよく考えます。 女性の成功にはどういう意味があり、男性のものと何が違うのか。友人ともよくこのテーマについて話をし、女性の成功と男性の成功に違いなどないはずだという結論に至ります。もちろん、すべての人が平等に得られるべきものです！しかし、ウーマン・イン・ソサエティで繰り広げられたトークを聞き、現実には違うことに気付かされました。女性でも男性でも、成功の条件となる要素は同じです−これ以上ない情熱を注げることが成功の根底にあります。しかし、女性の成功において違うのは、強い支援のネットワークが必要となる点です。女性が、自身が情熱を持って取り組める分野で自分の夢を実現し、同時に妥協せず、家族を持ったり、子供を育てるためには、自分の周りに信頼できる人のコミュニティを作ることに投資しなければなりません。それが現実です。子供のいる女性が宇宙に行くためには、子供を見てくれる人がいなければそんなことはできません。「子供を育てるためには村（コミュニティ）が必要」（少なくとも両親の存在は必要）であり、そのようなサポートがあって初めて女性は成功を手に入れることができるのです。マルチタスクが得意な女性は、出産をするだけでなく、授乳をしながら子供を育てていきます。 それは会議室であっても、バックステージであっても、場所を問わず、可能です。シフトの合間にだってできてしまいます。やろうと思えば、できます。私たちは女性なのだから。ただし、母親だからといってスーパーヒーローになる必要はないのです。自身を極限まで追い込み、マータルダム（苦難）の中で成功を手に入れる必要はないのです。自分で進むべき道を決め、情熱をかけたいと思うことに取り組むべきです。ただし、一人で叶える必要はありません。家族、友人、近所、同僚などの力も借りながら、自分の目標を叶えればいいのです。自分の夢を追求し、それを理解し、支援してくれる人の力を借りればいいのです。それが、成功のための方程式です。
メインステージでの登壇は、大局的な話が多かったですが、ワークショップでは現代の働く女性に向けた実用的なアドバイスやソリューションについての話がありました。 すべてのワークショップに参加することはできませんでしたが、行ったものでは良い情報を得ることができ、また、そこにいた人と個人的なレベルでつながることができました。
私が大好きなブランドの一つであるZadig et Voltaire（ザディグ エ ヴォルテール）は、パリっ子の振る舞いや、将来の展望について、また、自分の欠点も全て受け入れ、自信を持つことの大切さについて説いていました。私は自分の欠点を必要以上に気にしてしまう傾向があるので、その考え方にすごく共感しました。
Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de MaigretとSophie Masの共著である本、“How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits（どこにいてもパリっ子になる方法：愛情、スタイル、そして悪い習慣）”という本も買ってしまいました。この本が伝えているのは、パリっ子たちが信条としている“Joie de vivre”−生きる喜びという考え方です。「人生を慈しみ、楽しいことをすることは、子供に良い影響を与えるだけでなく、母親にとっても大事です。なぜなら、子供が生まれる前に送っていた人生を取り戻すことにもなるからです。」
本当にその通りで、次から次へと襲いかかる家事や仕事の業務を抱えて常に疲弊し、ストレスを抱え、イライラしている姿を子供に見せてはなりません 。なんとしてでもそんなお母さんになることを避けなければなりません。たとえそれが、子供を信頼できる人に預けて（もしくはテレビ番組に託して）マッサージに行ったり、コーヒーを片手に静かなひとときを過ごすことを意味したとしてもです。リラックスし、自分たちのことをしっかりとみてくれるお母さんが側にいた方が子供たちも安心感を抱きますし、人生において大切なものの優先順位をつけられる子になるはずです。少なくとも、私はそのように考えています。

This year, I often find myself contemplating on the idea of female success. What it means and how it is different from the one of a man. My friends and I often discuss this topic and always agree that there really shouldn’t be any differentiation between the two. And on the surface, yes – equality for all! But listening to the talks at Women in Society conference I realized that it is in fact different. The foundation of success is the same for both men and women – do what you love. Yet, female success is different from that of men because it also requires the erection of a strong support network. In order for women to realize their dreams and do things they are good at and that they love, yet not compromise having family and raising children, they need to invest a lot into community creation and surround themselves with people they trust, love and rely on. It is the simple truth. A mother of young children can never go into space without having someone to watch over them. It takes a village to raise a child (at least both parents for sure) and it is what defines female success. Blessed by nature with the ability to multitask, we give life and then nurture that life with our own bodies in the conference rooms, backstage and in between shifts. If necessary, we can do it. We are women. But being a mother shouldn’t require being a superhero as well. We don’t have to push ourselves to the extremes and define our success in martyrdom. You can make your own choices, you can do what you love but you have to rely on your community of family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and institutions to help you realize your goals. Be stubborn and surround yourself with people who appreciate it. That’s the formula.
As the main stage presentations were all about the big picture and bold actions, workshops were focusing on practical advice and solutions to a modern working woman. I couldn’t attend all of them but the ones that I did go to were informative and allowed women to connect to each other on a more personal level.
One of my favorite fashion brands Zadig et Voltaire was talking about Parisian attitude, outlook on life and the confidence to be who you are embracing all your flaws and owning them. I really liked that as I myself often obsess over personal imperfections and shortcomings. I even bought a book “How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits” by Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Maigret, and Sophie Mas.
The book’s main message lies in a Parisian philosophy of “Joie de vivre” – a joy of living.
“Loving life and doing enjoyable things is the best way of inspiring children to grow up and also the best way for mothers to never miss the lives they led before they had children. ”
Indeed, being constantly tired, stressed and irritated from the barrage of domesticity and work obligations teaches a poor lesson to our kids. Whatever you do, avoid being THAT mother to your kids, even if it means leaving them in trusted hands (or a TV set) while you go and enjoy your massage or a quiet cup of coffee. They will appreciate you much more relaxed and focused on their needs and grow up to become secure and with the right set of priorities. That’s a solid point of view in my opinion.

このようなカンファレンスに出て、鼓舞され、ワクワクした気持ちで自分が抱える課題に立ち向かおうと思うのに、どこから始めたらよいかわからず、変化に対して臆病になって結局何も変えられない女性が多いのではないかと思います。それがとても残念です。手助けやメンターをどうやって探すのか、サポートしてくれる人のネットワークをどうやって築いたらいいのかなど、疑問に思うことはたくさんあると思います。そこで、そのような人を支援できるよう、複数回に渡ってフォローアップイベントが開催されることが大事だと思っています。そのため、今年はそこに着目し、取り組みを行っていきたいと考えています。女性を勇気付けるイベントを開催するだけでなく、人生をより豊かなものにするはじめの一歩となる、彼女たち
を支援する「村」を作るようなイベントをシリーズで開催したいのです。これに対して何か良いアイデアを持っていたり、私のこの取り組みに協力していただける場合は、ぜひご連絡ください。このようなイベントを、同じ想いを持つ女性（もしくは男性）と企画できたらこれ以上嬉しいことはありません^-^
最後に、GRIDでは働く女性のためのイベントを2つ予定しています。
1つめはElleとカルティエが日本における女性起業家を支援するための交流イベント、「エル ウーマン・イン・ソサエティ ～女性起業家に聞く、インスピレーショントーク～」です。自分で起業しようと考えている方、すでに起業している方（どんなに小さいビジネスでも）、ぜひゲストとして申し込みの上、ご参加ください。同じような志を持った女性とつながり、ネットワークを広げる機会になるはずです。
2つめはガイアックスがオーガナイザーを務めるマンスリーイベント「FUTURE PROOF アイディア創出&事業化イベント」です。今月のテーマは「働く女性」。現代の働く女性が直面する課題についてのアイディアを出し合い、そのアイディアを持続可能な事業に落とし込んでいきます。優秀なアイディアは、ガイアックスのスタートアップスタジオファンドへのピッチの機会を与えられ、承認されると資金援助やサポート受けることができます。

The only thing I do regret at such conferences is that after feeling inspired, uplifted and ready to face challenges, women tend to come back to their old paths of being insecure and timid because they simply don’t know where to begin changing their lives. How to start, where to look for resources, how to find mentors and build a strong support network. So, I think there should always be a series of more intimate follow-up events and this is where my focus lies for this and next year. I want to run a series of events that will not just encourage women but also help them build their “village” and make first steps towards changing their lives for the better.

Another one is organized by Gaiax within its monthly Future Proof ideation framework. This month theme is going to be “Working women”. We will gather to brainstorm together and come up with innovative ideas based on the challenges that a modern working woman faces. Then, we will try to turn those ideas into sustainable businesses. Those, that feel strongly about their business idea will later have a chance to pitch it to Gaiax startup studio fund and receive funding and support upon approval. I will be one of the moderators so please come if you have time and say Hello. ^-^
