創業以来、ガイアックスはon the grid（オンライン）で革新的なソリューションとシェアサービスのプラットフォームを提供して、人と人をつなげることには力を入れてきました。 昨年、私たちはこのミッションの実現のため、off the grid 、つまりオフラインにも活動範囲を広げてNagatacho GRIDをオープンしました。本日1周年を迎えたNagatacho GRIDのビジョンは、ここに来る人々が有意義なつながりを作り、新しいアイデイアを共有し、その人のコミュニティにポジティブな変化をもたらすことです。
こんなわけで、先週の金曜日、Nagatacho GRID 1stアニバーサリーパーティで挨拶を始めたのです。私にはGRIDがオープンしてからすでに1年が経つとはとても思えません。ハンモックを地下室の天井に吊るし、屋上の床板をハンマーで打ち付けていたのは、私の記憶の中ではまだとても新しいことです。自身のこだわりに見合う家具を大急ぎで探し、夢を見て、計画し、交渉してきたことをまだ鮮明に憶えています… それから1年後、GRIDは想像を絶するほど非常に幅広い分野の人々が集まり、活気あふれる交流地点となりました。東京にも似たような場所がたくさんあります。スタイリッシュで、開放的なフロアスペースで、無料のコーヒーがあって、良い音楽と流行りのインテリアを揃えてあって。しかし、これらの場所には、主婦と政治家、学生とNPO、イノベーターと食品メーカー、子供と投資家を一つ屋根の下に集め、結びつけているところはありません。
まったく別の人を集めてお互いに「こんにちは」と言うそのたびに、魔法を目の当たりにするという、GRIDの使命を実現できたことが、私にとって最も誇りに思うことです。

Last year, we started to implement our mission off the GRID – offline as well. We opened Nagatacho GRID with the vision of a physical platform for continuous communication where we can empower people who come here to create meaningful connections and bring positive changes to their communities.”
– this is how I started my greeting at Nagatacho GRID 1st Anivissionary party last Friday. I can’t believe that it’s already been a year since GRID opened its doors. Bolting hammocks to the ceiling at the basement and hammering at the woodboards on the rooftop is still fresh in my memory. I still remember frantically looking for furniture to fit my stubborn taste and dreaming, planning, negotiating… A year later, GRID is the vibrant Tokyo hangout spot for the most eclectic crowd imaginable. There are many similar places like that in Tokyo – stylish, open floor spaces with free coffee, good music and hip interior. But none of those places gather housewives and politicians, students and NPOs, innovators and food makers, kids and investors under one roof. This is what I am most proud of – the success in realizing GRID mission of gathering utter strangers together and witnessing the magic take place every time they say Hello to each other.
そしてまさに、GRIDは交流地点になりました。
GRIDは単なるオフィスやイベント会場、共同作業スペースではありません。上質で、充実した、有意義な時間を過ごすために来る場所であり、GRIDをどう使うかはあなた次第なのです。ガイアックスにとっても、GRIDは単なるオフィスではなく、魅力的に思えることを活用できる職場の1つなのです。私たちはコミュニケーションのためにここにやってきます。つながりが最も重要なのです。私は自宅で自由に仕事をすることができ、オンラインで会議に参加することもできますが、GRIDに来る人々と会うのが楽しいので毎日ここに来ています。いつものメンバーや新顔の人々、いろいろな方がいますが、いつも廊下で「こんにちは」と言ったり、一緒にコーヒーを飲んだり、数あるイベントの一つに一緒に参加するなどして仲良くなります。
このつながりは、物事を押し進めたり、革命を起こすくらい信じられないほどの力を持つ何か大きなものの一部なんだと感じさせます。
And yes, GRID is a hangout spot. It is not an office or an event venue or a co-working space. It is the place where you come to spend good, fulfilling, meaningful time at and it’s entirely up to you how you do it. Even for Gaiax it is not an office but rather one of the workplaces that we can use if it strikes our fancy. We come here for communication, for connection above anything else. I can freely work from home and have meetings online but I come here every day because meeting people here is enjoyable. It’s old faces, it’s new faces but always the friendly faces that say Hello in the hallways or share a hot cup of coffee with me at the Attic or come to one of the many events. They make me feel a part of something bigger, something that has an incredible power to move things, to start a revolution.

Gaiax community has been growing big with each passing day and is full of remarkable people. Here, you can find a social media specialist who measures his goals in happiness, a homeschooling parent who is crowdfunding a shared nursery school, a working mother of 4 who is raising awareness of inclusion and helping people with physical and mental disabilities. Here, you can find social innovators and creatives from all around the world, agile engineers and community managers, PR mavens and student activists, zen buddhists and rural farmers, massage therapists and financial advisors and hopefully you. One of the events worth mentioning is the regular screening of Gaia symphony documentary series that present the theory of Gaia – the very theory from which Gaiax derives its name. The theory suggests that the life on the Planet exists because of the relationship between living organisms and the earth itself. Only connected, we can live in harmony and sustain the planet in its fruitful state. And connected we will be. The series will start screening this summer so please come and join us.
