Tech in Asia Tokyo is one of the largest tech conferences in Japan and it keeps growing each year. It is not only an offline networking gathering for those looking for global opportunities but also a great learning platform where you get to catch up on all that is relevant in the tech world.

My relationship with TIA began last year when TIA country manager David Corbin asked me to speak at the Tech in Asia Tokyo 2016 Design stage. It was an interesting experience and despite taking on the role of an expert speaker I learned a whole lot myself. Not many people would believe it (I conceal it well) but I am an utter introvert and so presenting on a big stage in front of an audience is always a big challenge for me. I was so worried about my speech that I worked myself up to 39C fever. ^-^ It went well though and I enjoyed Q&A part of the presentation more than I thought I would.
I was talking about how to design and launch a multi device website in one day – a relevant topic to all starting businesses with the lack of time, money and people. ^-^ In my opinion, with the use of the right tools, anyone can build an essential website in as little as one day. If you are interested in the details, here is the blog post about my presentation.

その後、Tech in Asiaツアー “Road to Singapore” 2016 がありました。

Then, there was Tech in Asia tour “Road to Singapore” 2016 where David asked Gaiax CEO to be one of the panel judges at the city pitch competition. They had one-on-one talking session discussing the entrepreneurial environment in Japan. The percentage of University graduates starting their own companies right away is very small due to the lack of confidence and support for small business in Japan. And so, Yuji Ueda thinks that startup studios like Gaiax are the perfect gap-filling environment where people with potential can nurture their passion and gain the necessary confidence and knowledge to start their own journeys.

Finally this year, Gaiax became a community leader participating in the conference for the first time and hosting one of TIA’s networking events called Founder’s night at GRID.
For the conference, we setup a booth to present Gaiax incubation projects like Tabica (experience sharing platform), Tadaku (meal sharing platform) and TRUSTDOCK (identity verification tool based on API technology). We had a great location and a lot of visitors interested in our products. We even had to run back to GRID to fetch some more pamphlets. ^-^

There were some great ideas from startups all over Asia and beyond like LaFabric (an online platform for custom made clothing), Atmoph with their awesome digital windows, Protectiq – peer-to-peer insurance via blockchain technology,  Imagga – an image recognition BtoB service that provides image tagging APIs and my favorite Kakiemon – a robot that handwrites Japanese greeting cards with a real fountain pen!!! GRID tenants like Crowdrealty and Shopify were presenting as well.

My friend Michael Holmes was working the event (as he does each year) but this time he was there with his amazing new photobooth setup. It takes photos and then automatically uploads them on social media with chosen branding attributes and hashtags. I plan to use it for GRID 1st anniversary party in February.

The Founders’ night went well and although not that many people showed up (partly because this year TIA held 4 different networking events simultaneously) , all the good ones were here. ^-^ I had a great time meeting new people, showing them GRID, discussing various business opportunities and collaborations. I really enjoy throwing this sort of parties and plan to do so more often in 2018.

At the Founder’s night, I met nomads – people who work remotely and live all over the world. It was fascinating hearing their stories. For example, one guy chooses places to live for their best seasons preferring to spend spring in
New York, summer in Amsterdam, Autumn in Tokyo, winter in Bali. He works with clients he never met and his employees are located mostly in Russia, the country he never visited. Japanese people can only dream of such lifestyle. ^-^ Thanks to him, GRID now hosts regular nomad meetups. Check Nagatacho GRID Facebook page for schedule or sign up to Gaiax community newsletter to receive regular updates on GRID awesome events. ^-^
